Hope for paws better together program using my senior medically necessary dog for donations for years (2021-2026)

Continuous Exploitation for Donations vs. Refusing Service Animal Care

I am exposing a massive, ongoing double standard by the Executive Director, Kathy Powelson. Over the years ( 2021-2026) I have been in this program, Kathy Powelson has repeatedly and consistently asked me for photos of my medically necessary senior dog.  She explicitly admits in writing right here: "This helps to raise donations. If you are okay, with it, please send me a photo :)"

Using My Dog as a Financial Asset: And has for years since 2021 This was not a one time favor. Kathy Powelson has constantly used my medically necessary senior dog as a marketing tool to bring in funding and pull on the heartstrings of donors to collect money for her foundation.

Refusing Critical Support: While they are perfectly comfortable collecting donations off the back of my medically necessary senior dog, they completely refuse to help me with the essential care and vaccinations my puppy needs. This puppy needs her vaccines to safely undergo training and become certified as my service dog.

The Hypocrisy: Kathy Powelson will happily exploit a disabled person's senior dog to fundraise, but will turn right around and deny the necessary veterinary support required to transition to a new service animal telling me to wait until my dog passes away to enroll my puppy that would be a certified service dog NOT PET!

Because of this blatant disrespect and corruption, I am formally revoking all consent. Kathy Powelson has absolutely zero right to continue using any photos or imagery of my dog to raise money for her organization while simultaneously threatening my access to care and refusing to help my puppy get the care she needs you could use all the donations you made off my senior girl.

Hope for paws better together program Email : Threat about flea treatment incident

These screenshot is a direct example of the flea treatment incident I broke down in my other post #1. After they aggressively forced a vet change on me, they officially tried to gag me. As you can see in black and white, the Program Coordinator, Lilliana Olmedo, explicitly threatens me: “any public criticism directed toward Tynehead Animal Hospital, will result in immediate disqualification from the Better Together Program.”
This is absolute proof of their systematic corruption. It shows that the abuse doesn't just come from the Executive Director, Kathy Powelson she has her staff do her dirty work and threaten vulnerable clients, too. They actively use my dog’s essential medical care as a weapon to extort my silence because they are terrified of the public finding out how they operate behind closed doors.

Hope for paws better together program contract

 Contract and Breach of Contract
As you can see in the pictures of the enrollment contract above, this agreement explicitly states that a Human Support Coordinator is supposed to be in place to handle client issues and support needs. I actually just received an email from them admitting that they used to have one, but now they don't. But let's be real: even when they did have a coordinator listed, that person never once did their job. I have been in this program since 2021 and I have never once spoken to a human coordinator. They have never gotten involved to help, leaving vulnerable clients completely unprotected while they hire for other positions.
Because there is no oversight, the Executive Director, Kathy Powelson, it allows her to abuse her power and clients who are in severe physical, mental, and financial distress. She has been on a massive power trip, breaching the contract's standard of respect and abusing her authority for years.
This behavior heavily escalated back in 2024  Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic was forcing me to bring my dog back and forth every single month for 9 months straight. At the time, my doctor and I thought my extreme pain was sciatic nerve pain, but it was actually severe fibromyalgia. To get to the clinic, I would have to take two buses. Nearest bus to me is a 20-minute walk just to get to the bus stop from my house, and another then get off take a 2nd bus then walk another 20-minutes to the clinic. That means I was forced to carry my dog in a bag for 80 minutes total, back and forth, every single week while in absolute medical agony.
When I finally told Kathy Powelson that enough was enough because I was in physical distress and it was becoming too much for me mentally emotionally physically and financially on a strict income, she didn't care. She used the contract as a weapon, telling me straight up that the contract states you must follow veterinarian advice, and if I didn't keep coming to every single appointment, I would be immediately kicked out of the program does Kathy Powelson not realize that she's not kicking me out of the program? She's kicking out a senior 13 year old papillon? Kathy Powelson actively used threats and fear to force me into medical distress.
Following that board conversation and those grueling 9 months, I finally spoke directly with the Board President, Dr. Llewellyn, on a phone call that I have fully recorded. He did try to keep the main focus on my dog and her care, which is what it should be. However, he also started making excuses for Kathy, claiming she’s "never really had any issues" and that he’s "known her a long time." While it was completely unacceptable for him to make the conversation about Kathy Powelsonh her behavior was incredibly unacceptable and the board did ultimately step in and put a stop to the non-stop weekly and monthly visits.
Because they intervened, I was finally given a break. I did exactly what was asked next: I brought my dog back 6 months later, on January 8th, 2026, and Dr. Llewellyn checked her over. She was given a clean bill of health, with just a little bit of cloudiness in her eyes. I have that conversation recorded as well. I understand that vets sometimes have to pass instructions to the Executive Director, but the aggressive way Kathy Powelson went about it using constant threats of expulsion to force compliance is what was so deeply concerning.
This contract has been breached on numerous occasions, and Kathy Powelson is only able to get away with it because there is zero internal accountability.
Note to my viewers: There are far more threats, abuses of power, and breaches of contract from Kathy Powelson that I can completely prove. As time goes on and I continue to dig through years of emails and recordings, I will be continuously editing, updating, and adding more concrete evidence to this post so everyone can see the full extent of what has been happening behind closed doors. There is a lot more to come and i'm also still learning how to use this app and how to post things and just be a bit patient with me , please.

Contract Transparency: My Legal Rights and Freedom of Speech:
I have posted my entire enrollment contract above in black and white to prove a single, undeniable fact: nothing I am doing by writing this blog is a breach of this agreement.
There is No Gag Order: Look closely at the contract terms regarding client expectations and the final acknowledgment. Nowhere in this document does it state that a client forfeits their right to free speech, their right to run a blog, or their right to share their real life experiences.
Honest Facts vs. "Impoliteness": The program tried to use clauses about "respect" to threaten me with disqualification. Sharing a truthful, factual account of my experience backed by written records and evidence is not harassment or disrespect. It is transparency. You cannot dictate how I speak or force me to stay quiet about how I have been treated.
Reputation vs. Animal Care: If this program chooses to retaliate by terminating or threatening to remove my 13-year-old senior Papillon, Zoe, simply because I published the truth, it will speak volumes about your organization's true character. It proves you are far more terrified of a blow to your public reputation than you are concerned with the actual welfare of the animals you claim to protect.
I am completely within my legal rights to document my reality on The Truthfulness. Any attempt to use my senior dog's essential medical care as a weapon to force compliance or silence me will be updated here immediately for the public and Google to see.

The Double Standard: This program explicitly wanted people to go on CBC News to talk about their experiences when it painted them in a good light. So, according to their logic, it is perfectly fine for clients to speak out publicly but only if it's on their specific terms and serves their marketing. The second a disabled client uses their voice to speak the unvarnished truth on a personal blog, they will weaponize a senior dog's medical care to force silence I know I'm going to to be threatened And receive an email stating that my dog can no longer be enrolled in the program due to some type of reason. They will come up with something.I'm just waiting for it and I'll keep you all posted.

My Experience with Hope for Paws "Better Together" Program

My Experience with the Hope for Paws Better Together Program

Hi, my name is Laura. I am writing this to share my experience with the Hope for Paws Better Together program since 2021, specifically with the Executive Director, Kathy Powelson While the program is supposed to help people in need, my experience has been filled with anxiety, threats, and control.

Please bear with me as I share these events. I am trying my absolute best to present these situations in order, but because this pattern of behavior has been going on for years, things might be a little scrambled. Going back years is incredibly difficult, especially while navigating severe fibromyalgia and severe chronic pain daily. I ask my viewers to please be patient and understanding as I compile and upload everything. I am doing this because I refuse to be silenced anymore.

Here is how these situations occurred:

1. Tynehead Clinic (The Flea Incident)

The issues began at Tynehead Clinic. Because of my severe OCD and PTSD, I panicked when I found a flea on my dog. I called the clinic, and they told me three separate times that they would call me back in 20 minutes within a 60-minute period. When they didn't, I kept calling back every 20 minutes out of sheer panic. Instead of understanding my anxiety, they complained to Kathy Powelson. I was removed from that clinic just for frantically trying to advocate for my dog.

Furthermore, Lilliana Olmedo, who previously worked there, explicitly told me on the phone when this happened that I was not to make any Google complaints, write any reviews, or say anything about the clinic I was told to stay quiet.

2. Scottsdale Clinic (The Dental Panic)

I was reassigned to Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Stephens told me straight up that if my dog didn't get dental surgery immediately, her jaw would break. Being on disability, I panicked about the funds and applied to the BC SPCA for help. But when the SPCA contacted the vet, Dr. Stephens completely downplayed the situation to them, changing her story to say it was just a "possibility."

To tell a vulnerable client that their dog's jaw would break, and then turn around and tell an agency it's just a possibility is incredibly triggering and provoking. When I confronted Dr. Stephens on the phone about this contradiction asking her directly if this was just about money and why she was telling me one thing and the SPCA another Dr. Stephens had a massive attitude with me. When I told Dr. Stephens I have severe complex PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks, Dr. Stephens countered by saying, "Well, I have anxiety too." Don't ever compare your anxiety to my severe, diagnosed clinical conditions. It was profoundly disrespectful and rude but in Kathy Powelsons email apparently I was the rude one.

The fact that a medical professional tried to claim they had anxiety is a complete joke, especially considering I'm navigating severe complex PTSD and severe OCD every single day. For a professional to turn around and weaponize "anxiety" against a client with severe, documented mental health conditions is completely backward and deeply offensive.

Because I stood up for myself after being actively provoked, Kathy Powelson stepped in and threatened to remove my dog from the program, claiming I was being "disrespectful to staff."

3. Dr. Llewellyn

After that incident, Dr. Llewellyn's offered to take on my dogs care. He has been an amazing vet, and I have absolutely nothing but good things to say about him. He was the one who personally offered to take my dog on as his case. I have never had a single issue with him whatsoever. We have always had mutual respect and understanding. It is incredibly unfortunate that he is away for three weeks right now, because I know for a fact things would be entirely different if he were here.

4. Cassie (The Week-Long Food Delay)

While Kathy Powelson was away, another person named Cassie took over. My dog is on a strict, medically necessary Urinary SOS diet to prevent bladder stones. I contacted Cassie for help getting this vital food. I left voicemails and phone calls with zero response, and she only barely responded to my emails here and there.

Throughout our brief email exchanges, Cassie never once expressed a single shred of concern for my dog. She never asked vital questions like: "How much food does your dog have left?", "Is she completely out of food?", or "Is this an emergency?" Instead, she casually stated she would "see if she could find a volunteer" and left me completely stranded over the weekend with absolutely no response.

Because they are closed on weekends, she effectively left a medical animal at risk of running out of vital food all weekend. I am a responsible owner and would never let my dog run out of food, but no thanks to her neglect, a full week had passed by Monday.

Having had enough, I added all the board members to the email chain. The moment I did that, Cassie called me immediately with a massive attitude, demanding to know why I added the board members and lecturing me that they don't do food delivery and that I'd have to find my own way. When she suggested Uber, I agreed to set it up and e-transfer the funds. She then stated, "Oh, Kathy Powelson will pay for the food and treats." Let me be clear: Kathy Powelson did not pay for it out of good faith; she did it because she knew she messed up entirely by making a medically necessary dog wait a week for food.

later in a email Kathy Powelson denied i waited a week I then showed her the screenshots of the emails with Cassie circled the dates, and proved factually that I was forced to wait a week, Kathy Powelson got entirely defensive and developed an even worse attitude.

5. Marnie at Scottsdale (The Wrong Bag)

The food finally arrived via Uber, but it was the wrong size bag. Knowing smaller bags would cost me more in delivery fees on my strict disability income, I called the clinic. A staff member named Marnie was incredibly disrespectful to me on the phone. Because I have a history of Marnie being incredibly rude and disrespectful to me both over the phone and in person at the Scottsdale clinic office, I turned on my recorder. I have the entire unedited transcript and audio of exactly how she spoke to me and how the whole conversation went.

6. Kathy’s Final Warning

A week later, Kathy Powelson emailed me a "final warning," threatening to kick my dog out of the program for being disrespectful to Scottsdale staff. This warning was based entirely on false reports and allegations. Kathy Powelson never once reached out to me to say, "Hey, there was a complaint, can we talk about what happened?" She simply blindly believed the staff member and issued a threat.

What she didn't realize is that I had recorded the whole interaction. I surprised both of them with the fact that I had the recording and transcript proving Marnie's disrespect. The moment Kathy Powelson realized I had undeniable proof, her tone completely flipped. She tried to claim she makes all the decisions, then suddenly switched up and claimed Dr. O'Brien would make the decision. Once I added Dr. Llewellyn to that email chain, it became absolute radio silence from them for months.

7. The Present: The Puppy & The Future

My health has declined significantly since 2021. Because my dog is now 13 years old and slowing down, she needs to stay in her role as my medically necessary dog. I have a puppy that I intend to have officially need to train and to get certified as a service dog to help me navigate my severe fibromyalgia, complex PTSD, and severe OCD.

When I asked Kathy Powelson if the program could help with the puppy's basic vaccines which are mandatory for a puppy to begin service training Kathy Powelson completely shut me down. She told me that I could only enroll another animal after my current dog passes away. To say that to a disabled client is abhorrent. My dogs are not "pets" they are medically necessary.

Conclusion

I want to clarify that I haven't recorded every single call since 2021. I started documenting and recording when I was reassigned to Scottsdale Veterinary Clinic and they forced me to attend appointments every single week and every single month for 9 months straight. I repeatedly told Kathy Powelson that I was in severe medical distress and physical pain from what my doctor and I believed at the time was severe sciatic nerve pain. Kathy Powelson's response was a direct threat: she told me that if I did not go to every single appointment the vet demanded, I would be immediately kicked out of the program. She actively forced me to attend appointments while in extreme physical agony.

At the end of the day, this program is supposed to be about the animals. It is supposed to protect them and support vulnerable owners. Instead, Kathy Powelson has turned this organization into a high school drama. She acts like a high school drama queen, turning tiny situations into massive conflicts, making sweeping allegations under the rug and issuing text book threats without ever looking into the facts or listening to the client.

Kathy Powelson, I am telling you right now: you are not going to scare me anymore. You are not going to instill fear in me, and you are not going to intimidate or threaten me. Sharing my lived truth on my own blog does not give you the right to threaten my medically necessary dog's enrollment, though I fully expect you to try that next. The public is going to see exactly who you are behind closed doors.

In my next post, I will be moving directly to the original board member email chain the exact point where my relationship with Kathy Powelson became completely tainted and where her threats heavily escalated.

Hope for paws better together program Permanent HandyDART holder

 The Receipts Don't Lie:

For anyone attempting to minimize, ignore, or gaslight my health needs: this is my Permanent HandyCard. A government transit authority does not issue these unless you have a fully documented, severe physical disability. My severe fibromyalgia drastically limits my mobility, which is exactly why a medical service dog is required for my daily survival and independence. I have the medical proof, I have the legal status, and I will no longer be ignored.

Welcome to the Evidence Package: My Experience with Paws for Hope Better Together Program

My name is Laura. I am a 35-year-old single woman living in Surrey, BC. I live with severe physical and mental health challenges, including severe fibromyalgia, complex PTSD, and severe OCD. I do not have any family or friends; it is just me, my senior dog Zoe, and my puppy, and they are all I have. Zoe is my medically necessary dog. She has a doctor's note from my doctor. My doctor has been my doctor for over a decade. This legally protects her under the BC Human Rights Code, Section 8(1), which explicitly protects individuals with physical or mental disabilities from being denied services or accommodation. Because Zoe is aging, I also have a successor Papillon puppy to begin the vital process of training to become my certified service dog.

I have been enrolled in the Paws for Hope "Better Together" program since 2021. The program's public mission is to keep pets and vulnerable owners together by providing veterinary and operational support. Unfortunately, my actual experience behind closed doors has contradicted this mission entirely. I have faced a systemic pattern of administrative neglect, unprovoked threats to terminate Zoe's care, and unprofessional communication, primarily driven by the Executive Director, Kathy Powelson.

Why This Blog Exists

I have remained quiet for a long time, but after receiving a final denial regarding basic veterinary support (such as puppy vaccines essential for my service dog in training), I am breaking my silence. This blog serves as a completely transparent, public Evidence Package.

My goal is not to spread rumors, but to present unedited, verifiable facts so that the community, the public, and the organization's donors can see exactly how funding is being managed and how disabled clients are being treated.

To ensure clarity, I will not jumble all of this information into a single narrative. Instead, I will be releasing and breaking my documentation and evidence in structured, individual posts each post will contain:

Factual Timelines: Breaking down specific operational failures chronologically.

Screen Recorded Emails: Verifiable proof of the exact communications sent by board members.

Audio Recordings & Transcripts: Direct records of the tone and language used during our interactions.

A Request for Your Patience

Because my history with this program spans from 2021 to the present, compiling, organizing, and uploading years of evidence is a massive, time consuming task. I am reviewing hundreds of records while simultaneously managing severe daily chronic pain and the physical demands of caring for my dog.

I ask that you please be patient with me as I steadily build out this archive. The truth takes time to organize properly, and I am dedicated to ensuring every single claim I make is backed by undeniable, physical proof.

Operational Failures

As you explore the upcoming posts, you will see a profound lack of organizational accountability. The program's enrollment contract explicitly references a Human Support Coordinator to manage client relations and resolve internal issues. Currently, no such independent human resources contact exists within the operations, leaving clients entirely subject to the unilateral decisions and hostile management style of the Executive Director Kathy Powelson Furthermore, with the Board of Directors President, Dr. Llewellyn, away on a three week absence, there is zero internal oversight or checks and balances to protect vulnerable clients from administrative abuse.

Thank you for standing with me, for reviewing the evidence objectively, and for demanding transparency from the organizations tasked with serving our community.

Stay tuned ...
