Paws for hope better together program make it make sense

Whatever is in the Dark Will Always Come to the Light

I need to write about being a permanent HandyDART customer. I acquired a puppy because I wanted to resolve the issue with my 13 year old senior dog. She is medically necessary with a doctor note, but she is not able to go on the HandyDART bus because of their policy. I spoke to Standards and told them that I acquired a puppy and I am going to get her trained and then get her certified as a service dog so the issue is resolved.

I cannot take the puppy or Zoe on HandyDART right now because they are not certified service dogs. Even with Zoe being medically necessary and protected by the BC Human Rights, I tried to fight that, but I do not want to fight with them. HandyDART took me on as a permanent client. I am not going to create problems. I am going to work with them, and that is why I acquired a puppy. The puppy was the best alternative and the best resolution. It resolved the issue, and we have moved forward.

My 13 Year Old Senior Girl and Dr. Llewellyn

My senior girl is slowing down and getting older. Dr. Llewellyn is her doctor, and he is an amazing doctor. He knows she has a bit of cloudiness in her eyes. She was seen on January 8th 2026, If I put her through the training, the certification, and the public access test, it would probably be exhausting for her. She probably would not pass because by the time she would be done, she would be about 14 or 15 years old. I am not going to push my 13 year old senior dog to become a certified service dog at 14 or 15 years old it's her time to enjoy her senior years.

Dr. Llewellyn is probably one of the best vets I have met in the last 13 years that I have owned Zoe. He has always been reasonable and understanding. There is nothing bad I can say about Dr. Llewellyn. He cares about animals and stepped in right away to take responsibility for Zoe and her care. He and I have talked about getting Zoe certified, and I know if I had a discussion with him he would understand where I am coming from.

Paws for Hope Better Together Program

I want to discuss the Paws for Hope Better Together program. The community donates to this program for people like me who are on disability. People have to understand that Paws for Hope is not free. You pay a certain copay. It is not free medical care. People enrolled in the program are not getting free care for their animals. Nothing is free in this world, and that is why people from the community donating to them. They get plenty of donations.

I have heard the excuses that they do not have the funding, but all of these things are just ridiculous excuses. I have watched their webpage. I see constant donations, money here and money there, and checks for thousands of dollars. They are constantly on the go to collect money and get donations. For them to say they do not have the funds is ridiculous. There is absolutely no excuse or reason for my puppy not to be accepted to get vaccinated and to get prepared for her training to become a certified service dog.

Part 4: Medical Care and Unreasonable Alternatives

My 13 year old senior girl Zoe has been in the program since 2021 when she was 8 years old. She has only been helped three times the whole time she has been in the program where the full costs have been paid for things like antibiotics and probiotics, which I mentioned in my previous post. It is unacceptable that this is the only help I have received in the last five years, and it is unacceptable that they have used my dog photo for donations, but they do not use those donations towards helping me.

Kathy Powelson stated to me that in a couple months they have a place opening up in Vancouver that is giving free vaccines. Do you understand that I live in Surrey? I do not live in Vancouver. How would I get to Vancouver when my only transportation is HandyDART and the puppy is not certified? She would not be able to get on the bus. You are giving me alternatives that are not accessible to me and not accessible to the puppy. Puppies cannot wait a few months for vaccines. They need to be vaccinated constantly for the first year of their life. It is very important, especially getting certified and going through training where there will be other dogs around.

Even after being certified, they have to be vaccinated. I do not get my senior girl vaccinated because she has never needed to be vaccinated recently. I vaccinated her for the first year of her life, when she was 3 years old, 6 years old and then when she was 8 years old , After that, I chose not to. I do not want to put vaccines in a 13 year old senior dog because that is just too harsh on them. I make the choices and decisions on what I do with my dog. I understand the contract states you have to listen to the advice of your vet, but Dr. Llewellyn and I have an understanding.

Staff Conduct, Drama, and False Accusations

Kathy Powelson has caused and created a great deal of drama, problems, stress, and anxiety for a lot of people by creating this termination and trying to get another person involved to terminate me. It is constant bullying. It gets to the point where enough is enough. You cannot treat animals like that. I hate that my 13 year old papillon is no longer enrolled in the program. It is not me that is enrolled in the program. It is my 13 year old dog that is enrolled for medical care. What part of that do you guys not understand?

Paws for Hope Better Together really needs to get their act together. They should be doing exactly what HandyDART is doing, working together as a team. Not all the staff members and board members are bad, but there are a few bad apples. I believe Kathy Powelson has created a narrative and a whole big spiel about me being disrespectful to staff. I have not been. I have a way of talking. I talk loud, and I have bad reception in my place, so I have to have my phone on speakerphone. I should not have to explain myself or the way I talk. I should be able to advocate for my dog the way I want to advocate for my dog and if you don't like it don't take you're personal problems out on me just be civil and respect 1 another.

Advocating for My Dogs

I will do what I need to do, but I am not going to disrespect people. If my tone of voice affects you, that is your problem, not mine. I have always talked the way I talk, and I am not going to change just because people want me to. That is controlling and manipulative. I abide by the contract. I bite my tongue when I need to, and I speak up when I need to speak up. But the problem is that when you advocate and call people out, you start to see their character change.

After a conversation with all the board members on June 1st 2025, that relationship got tainted. Kathy Powelson changed her tone, her attitude, and the way she spoke to me. I would still try to be civil with her and send her photos of my 13 year old senior girl. I have those emails and I have proof and evidence of everything I am talking about. I have no reason to lie or create tension but clearly Kathy Powelson does the program is not seeing that certain people are the problem. This is why a human resource coordinator is so important to have in a program like this. The community pays for them to have these resources, and they do not have them.

The Impact on My Health and Seeking Legal Advice

I did not get a puppy for fun. I got a puppy to help with my fibromyalgia, my complex PTSD, and my severe OCD. My community has made donations for situations like mine. I am disabled and my health has declined severely, and they know that. We thought it was sciatic nerve pain, but obviously it was clearly fibromyalgia. They have known how bad my health has declined. I have emails explaining how bad my pain was and how hard it is for me to go back and forth.

It is unacceptable the way this has escalated from June 1st 2025 up until now. The bullying, the harassment, the disrespect, the lying, the manipulation, and the gaslighting just shocks me I have caught them in numerous lies and lied about me numerous times but that's why I've seemed out a pro Bono lawyer when I comes to my senior girl this isn't the first organization that used her money funds and donations I've had enough people using my dog to make there organizations and we sit here struggle make that make sense because it doesn't and I will not stop to get my puppy and senior girl the medical care they deserve and are entitle to im on disability low income I fit the criteria to access the paws for hope better together program as a resource thats for my dogs not me this isn't about anything else but the animals but Kathy Powelson and others have tried to create drama stories stress and undo hearts hip to me and the only family I have which my puppy and senior girl I'm trying to also prepare my self my senior girls getting old and I can't and well not be alone when she passes i'm not trying to replace her. She could never be replaced, but the puppy is not only going to be my service dog. But she's gonna help me as my senior girl ages. And help me, when is her time to go? My senior girl has been my family for 13 years. And just the thought of knowing I could lose her it shatters my heart into a 1000 pieces.

No one understands I'm trying to build towards my futur I am trying to build towards my senior girls' future. I'm not only thinking about myself and thinking about her. She's also gonna need help too.As she ages, and anybody that has any common sense would understand that.
